About us

The Ashburton Salt project is a solar salt project proposed by K+S Salt Australia.

K+S Salt Australia is a local company established by German-based K+S, which has been operating salt and potash projects all over the world for more than 100 years.

Our project

The proposed project will be located on salt flats south-west of Onslow, just across the Ashburton River, in an area that is already home to multiple industrial projects.

If it proceeds, Ashburton Salt will produce 4.7mtpa of salt per year. Using similar processes to the existing project in Onslow and naturally occurring salt lakes in the region, the project will service the growth in salt demand in the Asia region.

Our commitment

As this is the first project K+S has proposed in Australia, we have established a local team who understands the context and environment. This team has consulted with traditional owners, the Thalanyji People, and members of nearby communities since 2016.

We encourage you to learn more about the benefits this project will deliver to the community, the consultation that has been undertaken and how we are implementing the findings of this consultation.

Our research

Understanding the local environment is essential to ensure our proposal takes an environmentally sensitive approach and mitigates potential risk, as possible.

Extensive research has been conducted over several years to inform our proposal for the site and progress final approvals. We have made our research available as part of our commitment to transparency.

The research can be complex; however, it is important, and we encourage you to review our findings.
